Petrovich Argunov (Russian, 1729-1802) • Portrait Of Ekaterina Alexandrovna Lobanova-RostovskayaIvan • 1754
Detail
The Resplendent Outfit: The outrageous, extravagant, sometimes humorous, and often exquisite outfits worn by the subjects of old portraits.
This dress looks maybe thirty years behind the times with the notched, and possibly cuffed, sleeves and matching neckline of her criss-cross bodice. From Grand Ladies.
Is that pattern made of velvet brocade? Gorgeous.

Иван Аргунов. Портрет Анны Николаевны (калмычки Аннушки) | Portrait of Anna Nikolaevna (Kalmyk Girl Annushka), by Ivan Argunov, 1767.
Annushka (Anna Nikolaevna) (1758? - 1799?) was the favourite pupil of Countess Varvara Alekseevna Sheremeteva. Wanting to perpetuate the memory of his wife, Pyotr Borisovich Sheremetev ordered his serf artist Ivan Argunov a portrait of her beloved Kalmyk pupil. In the image of the girl, he wanted to glorify the educational and charitable activities of Varvara Alekseevna. Annushka holds an engraved image of her mistress in her hands, showing it to the viewer. This painting is considered to be one of the best children’s portraits by Argunov.
Anna Nikolaevna received a proper education. She knew how to read, write, sing, dance, knew French. In 1793, Anna Nikolaevna married a nobleman of the Kostroma district, officer Pyotr Ivanovich Fatyanov. Nikolai Petrovich (son of Varvara Alekseevna) gave a good dowry and appointed an annual pension of two hundred rubles for the bride. Anna Nikolaevna and her husband had two children, who were named Pyotr and Varvara in honour of the Sheremetevs.
